7 Car Technologies That Prevent Car Auto Accidents

Studies by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and other organizations consistently show that drivers and driver error are the leading cause of auto accidents. One NHTSA study showed that 94% of accidents were due to driver error.

In response to studies like these, automakers have started installing safety features designed to help prevent auto accidents. Let’s take a look at 7 car technologies that may help prevent accidents and, subsequently, injuries and deaths.

7 Car Technologies That Prevent Car Auto Accidents

There are numerous car technologies aimed at safety, but these 7 may be helpful in actually preventing accidents from occurring:

  1. Forward Collision System

Forward collision systems have cameras and sensors that detect the distance between you and objects in front of you. If you are driving too close, the system will automatically slow your vehicle down to avoid a crash.

Lane Departure System

Distracted driving is a leading cause of swerving into other lanes of traffic. Lane departure systems have sensors that detect vehicles on either side of you. One version of this system gives an audible warning if your vehicle moves outside the lane. The other version also takes control of the wheel and steers the car back into the correct lane.

  1. Automatic Emergency Braking System

ABS systems are standard on most vehicles nowadays. These systems operate using cameras and sensors. The car will automatically apply the brakes if the system detects an imminent collision. Some systems have audible warnings to get the driver’s attention. Others require the driver to brake before the system kicks in.

  1. Blind Spot Detection

Blind spots are problematic for all drivers. Failure to monitor blind spots is a major cause of auto accidents. Drivers should always be aware of their blind spots, but blind spot detection systems can help. These systems use sensors to detect other vehicles nearby. When a vehicle is present in the blind spot, the system gives an audible warning. Some systems also have lights on the side view mirrors that light up when another vehicle is in the blind spot.

  1. Cross-Traffic Alert System

A cross-traffic alert system uses cameras and sensors to detect a pedestrian or another vehicle approaching from the rear or sides when the car is reversing. Lights installed on the rearview mirror may flash to indicate the direction, while an audible warning lets the driver know.

  1. Backup Cameras

Many newer vehicles come standard with backup cameras installed on the bumper or tailgate. These cameras help drivers see a wider view of what’s happening behind the vehicle. The camera is automatically activated when the car is put in reverse. The onboard display shows the driver what is directly behind and to both sides.

  1. Driver Monitoring System

Technology developers are continuing work on possible driver monitoring systems. These systems would use algorithms and other information to detect when a driver is drowsy or falls asleep at the wheel. The system would then alert the driver. These systems are not yet widely available.

Things to Consider about Car Safety Features

One thing we must remember is that not all cars have these safety features. Most cars manufactured today do have at least basic safety features. But there are many older cars on the road that don’t have the benefit of today’s technology.

Another thing to consider is whether certain safety features are inside your vehicle budget. If you want certain car safety technology on your car, you may be looking at paying more for your car. You may have the option of basic features or may purchase upgrades to the features of a new vehicle.

And finally, car accidents are stressful. If your accident was caused by someone else, you may have grounds to file a lawsuit. If you are involved in an auto accident, it is a good idea to speak with a Dallas car accident lawyer about your situation.
